A Message from the Principal
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
It is with great anticipation that I write this introductory communication to you. It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich culture of persevering scholars, extremely dedicated staff, and a supportive school environment. A legacy of excellence exists at P.S.48Q and I am diligently working to continue the progress as we combat the effects of this pandemic on our community. It is not an easy task however, I am prepared for the challenge.
My experience in education spans over 20 years. I have served for 17 years as a New York City Department of Education elementary school teacher and as a writing teacher specializing in Columbia University Teacher’s College Writing Project. My teaching role allowed me to understand the needs of our children and instruct them utilizing impactful research-based strategies. As an assistant principal, I was able to use my knowledge of teaching and learning and effective teaming practices to strengthen the school’s professional learning community. Consequently, targeting the learning goals of all scholars and successfully impacting their academic achievement.
I believe in educating the whole child. Therefore, our goal is to ensure that our school community knows our scholars well. Knowing your child well means assessing their academic strengthens and weaknesses and designing plans to support them. We are carefully analyzing school wide data and observing our scholars in academic and social settings. Our steadfast focus on the development of the whole child will result in strengthened social emotional and academic progress for all.
Parents, our school community needs you to join in our efforts to know your child well. We have scheduled parent engagement sessions every Tuesday afternoon immediately following dismissal. You can schedule appointments via telephone or virtually with your child’s teacher(s). During this time we encourage you to share your thoughts regarding your child’s progress and needs. We ask that you continue to ensure that scholars attend school daily, as there is a direct correlation between attendance and student academic progress. Together we can strengthen the village in which our scholar’s growth depends on.
In closing, communication is the key to success in our partnership for our scholars. Download our PS 48Q APP on your mobile device through the Apple Store or Google Play. The features of the P.S.48Q APP are accessible in all languages and it will help you connect with our school community and stay informed.
Faithfully,
Joan Duvernay, Principal
