Formative assessments are ongoing and are used to inform daily instruction. Impact > Intent; the focus is not on the intentions of teachers and staff but the yielded scholar outcomes and outputs. D28: Equity

Year 4 (2024-2025)

Grade level Teacher Inquiry, Data Meetings with ILT Vertical & ILT/AVID Core Team focused on data analysis of scholar’s work and assessments with instructional next steps.

Reading- Foundational K-2/Grades 3 to 5 “The Science of Reading”

Strengthen early readers phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, fluency and oral language comprehension in grades k through 2 through word play, blended phonemes, vowel activities, decoding using sound-by-sound blending, oral close reading, and timed fluent reading.

Strengthen readers in grades K to 5 understanding and use of vocabulary through repeated exposure, vocabulary in rich context, and restructuring vocabulary task to help scholars learn new words.

Written Responses Scholars will use a structured, content-based approach to all writing assignments and tasks, for example, writing prompts or the writing genres. They will engage in depth analysis of text. Scholars including ELLs/MLLs and SWD will use support and scaffolds accordingly to help them plan, discuss and organize their ideas and develop opinions; incorporate and connect their words and sentences; and/ or move from notes to developed paragraphs. Year 4 (2024-2025): Students writing across all content areas, the writing process and engaging in developing their ideas through the writing genres with the HMH curriculum. Short responses using IDD and extended responses using RAFT.

Math

Strengthen conceptual understanding through a laser focus on math fluency, verbalization of mathematical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Think: Math Block -Solve & Share, Math Discourse, Rigorous Task with Scaffolds, “You do, We do, I do” model of instruction.

NYCPS Math Shifts: Beginning with Making Sense of Problems-Solve & Share, Shared, Low-floor, High-ceiling Task and Discourse to develop understanding.

Year 4 (2024-2025): School wide ALL scholars engaging in math discussions using explaining their thinking MP3, matching task with learning goals and instructional strategies, anticipating scholar’s responses and appropriate teacher directed instructional next steps based on a “You Do, We Do, I Do model”, monitoring scholar’s response by focusing on their thinking demonstrated through task.

Accountable Talk - Scholars will actively engage and initiate discussions: using questioning, probing, and providing commentary that is appropriate to the discipline. They will use evidence and accurate knowledge to further develop ideas. ELLs/MLLs and SWD are supported with additional resources to meet their needs. AL- Hallmark: 2 D28:Equity & Focus

Year 4 (2024-2025): Planning questions using DOK open ended questions- Look for in Math Talks, emphasis on more rigorous discussion protocols such as Socratic Seminar, Philosophical Chairs, Stand, Sit, and Share.
